Why intercultural matters go beyond translating words
Haitian Creole Translator working to improve translation quality standards
Marleen Julien is a Haitian Creole specialist with more than 15 years of experience. Her dedication to promoting the Haitian language and culture has allowed her to build a trusted reputation as a language advocate.
For more than a decade, Marleen worked for the Haitian government and the United Nations, bringing her expertise and passion for language, culture, and development to the table. During that time, Marleen witnessed an alarming and widespread issue regarding the quality of Haitian Creole materials. With a focus on helping Haitians access information in their native language, she set out on a mission to improve the Haitian creole translation industry's standard.
In 2004, Marleen founded Creole Solutions to provide translation services and support to organizations that serve Haitian communities. For Marleen, Creole Solutions was more than just a new business venture – it was her life's calling. She built her business from the ground up and continued to increase the capabilities, services, and areas of expertise that Creole Solutions could offer its clients.
Today, Marleen continues to expand Creole Solutions' capabilities, ensuring that she leverages every possible tool available to promote her native tongue. She translates and publishes short stories that promote literacy and critical thinking amongst children in Haiti's remote areas. In nearly everything that she does, Marleen focuses on ensuring that Haitians have the resources they need to promote their development.
Throughout her career, Marleen has been recognized by several translation associations, including the American Translators Association. Marleen's extensive education and degree experience include a master's degree in International Development from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po).
